Maria Bach

Maria Bach was an Austrian artist and composer. Today, she is primarily known for her music, but since childhood, she had been painting and drawing. In 1940 she made the acquaintance of the Italian artist Arturo Ciacelli, with whom she would travel through southern Europe. She translated the impressions from these travels into landscape paintings and, in particular, into collages, which were exhibited in Austria, Germany, Italy and the US. Despite her work gaining increased attention and recognition during her lifetime, she was largely forgotten after her death in 1978.
In the Renner-Lanjus Collection
Maria Bach is a central figure in the history of the collection. It was created by her parents Baron Robert and Baroness Lenore Bach, a couple at the centre of early Viennese modernism. The collection was expanded by their daughters, Therese, Maria, Katharina and Henriette. Therese Lanjus, née Bach, placed the collection in the care of her adopted daughter Ilse Renner – the grandmother of Josef Renner, who manages the collection today.
