Johann Fruhmann spent his youth in Graz, studying at the School of Applied Arts under Fritz Silberbauer and Alfred Wickenburg. In 1948, he moved to Vienna and continued his studies under Robin Christian Andersen and Albert Paris Gütersloh. Fruhmann’s works were exhibited extensively in Austria as well as internationally. In 1954, he participated in the Venice Biennale and later in several world exhibitions, and received numerous prizes. In 1960, he, his wife, the painter Christa Hauer, and his father-in-law, the painter Leopold Hauer, opened the Galerie im Griechenbeisl (translating to ‘the Gallery in the Greek Pub’), which became an influential platform for avant-garde art and a meeting point between East and West.
