Ferdinand Stransky trained as a restorer from 1919 to 1923 under Serafin Maurer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Despite never receiving a formal artistic education, Stransky’s artistic success grew slowly but surely and he sold works while working as a restorer. In his works, he followed the tradition of the Austrian Expressionism and sought to transform colour into constructed forms. In 1937, he was accepted into the artists’ association Hagenbund. Following the Second World War, he joined the Vienna Secession and was a founding member of the group Der Kreis (which translates as ‘The Circle’). He participated in the biennials of São Paulo (1957) and Tokyo (1963) and received numerous national prizes.
